Two birds, emerald bamboo and morning glory - traditional Chinese flower painting by Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining) (1688-1766), from a 16 leaves album.
Castiglione was a Jesuit lay brother born in Milan, Italy. He studied painting in his early years, then he was sent to the court of the Qianlong emperor who was interested in European painting. From 1715 until his death Castiglione lived in China, he became a respected and appreciated painter of the Qing court under the name Lang Shining and was granted high official rank.

The leaves of this album were painted on silk between 1723-35 and are considered a masterpiece of the Yongzheng period.
