Artist's Description

The Thousand and One Nights, Arabian Nights - Collage of paper cut-outs by Henri Matisse, from 1950.

Matisse was 81, in bad health, unable to sleep, kept alive by his drive to create when he completed this paper cut-out composition for Arabian Nights. He had much in common with Scheherezade, the beautiful young heroine of the centuries old Persian story about how wakefulness and fear of death can be overcome by creativity and art. The abstract, colorful silhouettes of the composition are rich of symbolism and magic.
