Sun Song of Algoma - Scenic Canadian landscape with two tall pines standing atop a rocky cliff, against a bright blue sky with scattered clouds.
Johnston made more painting trips to Algoma in the late 1910s early 1920s with other members of the Group of Seven, making sketches on the spot. It was during a 1920 trip when he painted "Sun Song of Algoma", set from an unusual vantage point, providing a view looking up at the pine trees and an indigo sky. Johnston used a striking monochromatic colour palette of deep blues and purples, repeated in the sky, mountains and rock formations, contrasted with the bright white clouds.
Frank (Francis) Hans Johnston was one of the founding members of the Group of Seven, an influential art movement of Canadian landscape painters from 1920-33. He left the group in 1922 and changed his name to Franz Johnston in 1927.
