Description
Portrait of Marjorie Ferry - Blonde woman draped in a white satin sheet.
Marjorie Ferry was a cabaret entertainer in Paris when she met a wealthy financier and became his wife. Her husband gave her a large, gleaming cabochon ring as wedding gift and commissioned sought-after portraitist of Paris, Tamara de Lempicka, to paint a portrait of her, wearing the ring.
Tamara de Lempicka - nicknamed ‘the baroness with a paintbrush’ - captured many of her era's elite on canvas during the decades between the two World Wars, when she used to live in Paris and Italy, mixing with the high society.
Her signature, high classical style was influenced by Cubism, post-war Purism and Neo-Classicism, her works were characterised by their precise draughtsmanship, theatrical lighting and dramatic, sensual modelling of the human body - you can recognise her paintings immediately.
