Océanie, le ciel, - Oceania, The Sky - Composition with silhouettes of flying birds, plants, leaves, and sea creatures of Tahiti by Henri Matisse (1869-1954). Blue color version.
Océanie, le ciel, and its pendant composition, Oceanie, la mer - Oceania, The Sea - are screen-printed linen wall-hangings created between 1946-48, based upon cut-out paper maquettes reflecting on Matisse's memories of a 1930 voyage to Tahiti.
Matisse's words about this composition, "This panel, printed on linen—white for the motifs and beige for the background—forms, together with a second panel, a wall tapestry composed during reveries which came fifteen years after a voyage to Oceania. From the first, the enchantments of the sky there, the sea, the fish, and the coral in the lagoons, plunged me into the inaction of total ecstasy.
