North West Mounted Police - Royal Canadian Mounted Police - A vintage pictorial map of Canada showing the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P.), with inset views and text of historical events. Drawn by Peter R. Furse.
The map shows mounted police stations & patrols throughout the North-West Territories, during the year 1888, also administrative boundaries, location of Indian reserves, detachments, forts, posts, and air and marine division bases, whisky forts, with the founding dates. Border with views and text of historic events presenting the history of the R.C.M.P. Includes numerous historical events and many of the officers involved are identified by name. The policemen and their mounts creating an infinity symbol, and 2 insets provides history of the ride. Includes a text presents the early situated in the Northwest United States recounts the formation of the N.W.M.P., and a second text along the U.S.- Canada border tells the story of the Sioux and their flight to western Canada in an attempt to evade the three U.S. army pursuing them. The column of horses, men, and equipment along the bottom border illustrates 'The March to the West' of 1874.
Peter Furse was a British Navy officer who began his service WWI at age 17, during which time he received his first exposure to map drafting. After the war he continued his education at the University of Cambridge. When WWII came, he again served with the Royal Navy, ultimately elevating to the rank of Lieutenant commander. After spending several years in Africa, Furse and his wife, Barbara, emigrated to the village of Hampton, New Brunswick, Canada.
