Description
La perruche et la sirene - The Parakeet and the Mermaid - Cut-out collage from 1952 by Henri Matisse, with leaves, pomegranates and silhouettes of a parakeet and a mermaid.
Matisse started to create cut-outs from 1941, while recuperating from a major operation which prevented him working in his studio. The Parakeet and the Mermaid is one of his huge collages (337 x 768.5cm), it covered the whole studio wall when completed. He used to refer to this work as 'a little garden all around me where I can walk'.
