Description
Houses, Richmond Street, Toronto 1911 by Lawren Harris - Autumn streetscape with a row of houses and large trees.
Though Harris is primarily known for his simplified, stylized compositions of the Canadian landscape, he actually began his career painting detailed cityscapes, streets and houses in Toronto and other small Ontario towns into the 1920s.
Lawren Harris (1885–1970) was one of Canada’s most influential modern painters and a founding member of the Group of Seven. He is best known for his austere, monumental landscapes of the Canadian North, especially mountains, ice fields, and Arctic scenes. Harris believed that art should express spiritual and universal truths, not merely record appearances. His style evolved toward simplified forms, strong geometry, and luminous color, giving his landscapes a sense of timelessness and inner order. He also played a major organizational role, helping to promote modern Canadian art through exhibitions and artistic networks. In the 1930s, his work became increasingly abstract and spiritually oriented. Harris’s legacy lies in shaping both the visual language of Canadian landscape painting and the philosophical direction of modern art in Canada.
