In 1917–18 Johnston was commissioned by the Canadian War Memorials to record the activities of Canadian flying personnel training for overseas duty, his aviation paintings date form that period.
Frank (Francis) Hans Johnston was one of the founding members of the Group of Seven, an influential art movement of Canadian landscape painters from 1920-33. He left the group in 1922 and changed his name to Franz Johnston in 1927. His landscapes of the Canadian wilderness are exceptionally atmospheric and decorative, he's among the most productive and successful artists of his generation.
