Artist's Description
Armonia - Autorretrato sugerente - Harmony - Self portrait - mystical surrealist painting by Spanish-Mexican artist Remedios Varo.
A person sitting at a table in a study-like room, composing a three-dimensional sheet music by stringing different objects - flowers, leaves, vegetables, crystals, scraps of paper with mathematical equations. Ghost-like figures emerging from the walls of the room help her, while the floor's tiles come loose, drawers overflow, and birds nest in the back of a chair.
In this painting, a composer is, in Varo’s words, “trying to find the invisible thread that unites all things.” She believed in a universal system organizing the visible and invisible world, with a domain that extended to music, mathematics, and architecture, as well as the stars and planets. As such, music was endowed not only with the power to move us with its sonorous beauty but also to affect objects in the world.
